How to choose

  1. For a smart home, choose a Zigbee sensor

We recommend an open stack (Zigbee, Z-Wave or Matter): devices from different brands share one gateway (the Smartify Core LAN gateway is ₹8,100), so you can mix brands and add rooms without another app. The trade-off is that gateway and a little more setup. Aware Motion reports motion and light level to your gateway for any automation, but does not switch a load itself, so pair it with a switch or relay.

  2. For one light, a standalone sensor is enough

Standalone sensors, such as the WatchDog range, are listed with the protocol "Standalone" and are described as switching lights automatically. They work on their own, but they do not join a smart-home system, so they cannot start scenes or send alerts to your phone.

  3. Match the mounting style

WatchDog sensors are sold by mounting: ceiling, wall, false-ceiling, hidden-wall and a dedicated wardrobe sensor. Aware Motion mounts on a wall or ceiling with adhesive or screws, and Aware Wave Pro is a mains-powered ceiling unit with a 0.3 to 9 m detection range.

  4. Know the three technologies

PIR sensors react to a warm body moving. Microwave sensors, such as the WatchDog Microwave Sensor, can sense through glass and other thin materials, so place them where traffic outside the room will not set them off. mmWave sensors detect a person who is still, which suits desks, beds and bathrooms.

  5. Check how the sensor is powered

Aware Motion runs on a replaceable CR2450 battery with a low-battery warning, Aware Wave takes USB power, and Aware Wave Pro is mains-powered. See each product page for the power details of the other sensors.

Motion Sensors: common questions

What is the price of a motion sensor in India?

Motion sensors on this page start at ₹799. Basic standalone PIR and microwave sensors for lighting sit at the low end, Smartify's open-stack Zigbee Aware Motion (₹5,700) is in the middle, and mmWave presence sensors are at the top. The price guide above shows each band.

Do motion sensors need a hub or Wi-Fi?

Smartify's Aware sensors use Zigbee and need a Zigbee gateway (the Smartify Core LAN gateway is ₹8,100), which is what lets one sensor start lights, fans, scenes and alerts from different brands. Standalone sensors, such as the WatchDog range, need no hub or app but work only on their own wiring; each product page lists the details.

Which motion sensor is best for a wardrobe?

The WatchDog Wardrobe Sensor (₹2,499) is a standalone sensor built for this job: it lights up the wardrobe automatically and is listed as compatible with AC and DC lights. Ceiling and wall PIR sensors are designed for rooms rather than the inside of a wardrobe.

Can I use a motion sensor to light stairs and corridors?

Yes. Mount the sensor where it sees someone approaching, not where it looks across the stairwell, and use a sensor that also reads light level so the lights only come on in the dark. Aware Motion + LUX does this and its product page lists corridors as a use. Keep in mind that Aware Motion reports to your automation system and needs a switch or relay to turn the light on.

What is the difference between PIR, microwave and mmWave sensors?

PIR sensors detect movement of a warm body, which works well in ordinary rooms. Microwave sensors, such as the WatchDog Microwave Sensor, can detect through glass and thin materials and are used for concealed mounting. mmWave sensors detect presence even when a person is not moving, so lights stay on while someone sits at a desk or sleeps.

About motion sensors.

A motion sensor turns movement into an action: a light that switches on when someone walks in, or an alert when something moves while you are away. Prices on this page start at ₹799 for basic standalone PIR sensors.

For a smart home we recommend an open-stack Zigbee sensor: Smartify's Aware Motion (₹5,700) is battery-powered with an 8 m range and reports light level, so an automation can wait until the room is dark. Where people sit still, the Aware Wave mmWave presence sensor detects presence, not just movement: Aware Wave at ₹9,297 and Aware Wave Pro at ₹13,050.

Standalone sensors, which need no hub or app, are the simple choice when all you want is a light that comes on by itself.

The Motion Sensor keeps you updated for all the activities taking place in your home and gets you notified in case of any suspicious movements. Moreover, you can also create different customised scenes upon detection/absence of the motion as per you needs.
