You're renting and can't rewire Battery sensors and retrofit modules that fit behind existing switches, all removable when you leave. You'll need a hub — budget ₹8,000–₹18,000 for one that covers the whole flat.
One or two devices, just testing the water No hub to buy. Plug it in, scan a QR code, done. Stops scaling around 10–15 devices, and most are dead when the internet is.
Whole-home automation, 2–4 BHK The mesh gets stronger with every mains-powered device you add, and it's the protocol with real Indian device choice at every price point. Shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi — worth moving your router to a clear channel.
Thick walls, long runs, or a 4+ BHK spread over floors Sub-GHz at 865–867 MHz travels through masonry far better than anything at 2.4 GHz, and sidesteps Wi-Fi congestion entirely. Fewer devices sold in India and they cost more than the Zigbee equivalent.
Your broadband is unreliable With a local hub, schedules, scenes and wall switches keep working through an outage. Nothing has to reach a server. Check the specific hub does local processing — some are cloud-dependent despite the local radio.
New construction or a full renovation, wiring not yet closed Wired, no radio to congest, and a 30-year track record. This is the only window where it's economical to install. Costs several times a wireless system and needs a certified integrator. Overkill below roughly 3,000 sq ft.
A villa, hotel, office or anything commercial Built for building-scale loads, HVAC and lighting control, with vendor-independent hardware you can still buy in ten years. Specify it at design stage — retrofitting KNX into a finished building rarely makes sense.
You're split across iPhone and Android and want to stay flexible One device controlled by Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home simultaneously, each with its own automations. Indian availability is thin. In practice, buy Zigbee behind a hub that bridges to Matter.
