Motorised curtains are one of the most satisfying smart home upgrades — and one of the most misunderstood. The word "motor" is used for two different things: a motorised track or rod that physically moves the curtain, and a controller that makes an existing curtain motor smart. Mix them up, or pick one that does not suit your track or curtain weight, and you end up with a system that jams, skips or wears out early. Get it right and the curtains open at sunrise, close when the AC starts, and answer a voice command.

This guide is for three situations: you want to motorise curtains you already own, you already have motorised curtains and want them smart, or you are choosing a motor and track for a new room. Product facts come from the makers' own pages and from our store listings. Where a maker publishes no figure, we say so instead of guessing.

The short answer

  • Start with an open stack. Zigbee, Z-Wave and Matter devices from different brands share one gateway and work in the same scenes as your lights and sensors. Smartify's Zigbee Layer Shutter (₹4,200) and TAC SH (₹22,200) are in this group.
  • Those two are controllers, not motors. They switch an AC curtain, blind or shutter motor that is already installed. They do not move a curtain on their own.
  • To motorise curtains you already own, you need either a motorised track or a clip-on drive. Round rods need a rod-mounted drive. Section below.
  • Somfy is an established motor brand with an India website and an installer channel. It uses its own radio system (RTS), so treat it as a proprietary, closed option. Details and trade-offs below.
  • Wi-Fi-only curtain products are labelled "Wi-Fi only, no hub" in this guide. They are cheap and simple, but tied to one brand's app.

Motor or controller? Know which one you are buying

  • Motorised track or curtain motor: the part that moves the curtain. It is mains-powered (wired) or battery-powered, and it has a rated load and track length.
  • Controller or module: a small unit, usually behind your wall switch, that sends open, close and stop signals to an AC curtain motor and adds app, voice and schedule control. It only works if the curtain is already motorised.
  • Clip-on drive: a battery-powered unit that mounts on an existing rod or track and moves the curtain. No wiring, lower load limits.

Roller blinds and shutters are a different mechanism again. They use a tubular motor inside the roller, not a sliding-curtain motor, so do not buy a curtain-track product for them.

Motorise your existing curtains

You can usually keep your curtains and fabric. What changes is the mechanism that moves them. Work through these checks before buying anything.

1. Is it a track or a rod?

  • Track (I-rail, U-rail or other channel profile): a metal or plastic channel with sliding runners, common in Indian homes. Motorised tracks and clip-on drives are built for specific profiles, so check the maker's compatibility list for yours. SwitchBot's page, for example, lists U-rail and rod versions and sells a separate accessory kit for I-rail tracks.
  • Round or square rod with rings: a decorative rod. A sliding-track motor cannot be used here. You need a rod-mounted drive. SwitchBot Curtain 3 (Rod Type) and the rod version of Aqara's Curtain Driver E1 are made for this.
  • Curved or bay tracks: check that the motor lists curved tracks. Somfy lists its Movelite 35 RTS for both straight and curved tracks.

If you are not sure what you have, take a photo of the track end, the runners and any cord, and send it with the track length before buying. Getting this wrong is an expensive mistake.

2. Weigh the curtains

Indian homes often have heavy curtains: lined blackout drapes in bedrooms, thick weaves in living rooms. Published load ratings differ a lot between product types:

  • Somfy Movelite 35 RTS (mains): up to 35 kg, track up to 10 m, per Somfy India's product page.
  • SwitchBot Curtain 3 (battery drive): up to 15 kg, per SwitchBot's product page.
  • Aqara curtain controllers (battery drive): maximum 12 kg, per Aqara's FAQ.

Weigh your curtains with the lining and rings or hooks on, and leave headroom. A motor run near its rated limit every day wears faster. If your curtains are heavy or the track is long, choose a mains-powered motor over a battery drive.

3. Pull-cord and U-rail tracks

Many tracks have a pull-cord or baton that opens the curtain by hand. On some tracks that mechanism is exactly what a motorised track replaces, so you may not be able to add a motor on top of it. A battery drive may fit the existing runners, but only if the maker lists your profile. Ask the maker or an installer whether your track model can be converted or has to be replaced.

4. Pick your route

  • Curtains already motorised (AC motor): add a Zigbee controller such as the Layer Shutter or TAC SH.
  • Hand-pulled curtains on a compatible track, light to medium weight, no wiring wanted: a battery clip-on drive.
  • Heavy curtains, long tracks, or a permanent installation: a mains-powered motorised track, installed professionally.
  • Decorative round rod: a rod-mounted drive.

Somfy: a motorised-track brand sold in India

Somfy is an established motor brand with an India website and a professional installer channel. Smartify does not list Somfy products in its store, so this is information to help you compare, not a Smartify offer. Everything below is from Somfy India's curtains pages, checked on 16 October 2026.

  • Movelite 35 RTS curtain motor: mains-powered (90–255 V), up to 35 kg on a track up to 10 m, for straight and curved tracks and curtain styles including pleated and ripple fold. Controlled with Somfy's Smoove wall switch, Telis or Situo remotes, or the Connexoon Window RTS app.
  • Irismo Wirefree 45 RTS: battery-powered, described by Somfy as "wirefree, plug-and-play" with a battery lasting 9 months, soft start and stop, manual operation and no wall damage. Somfy does not state a maximum curtain weight on that page.
  • Controls: Somfy's Smoove, Telis and Situo remotes and wall switches; Connexoon Window RTS and TaHoma apps. Somfy India says voice control with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant "may require interface".
  • Warranty: Somfy India states a five-year warranty on motors and controls for curtains, from the date of manufacture, offered to professional buyers under set conditions. Read the full terms or ask your installer.
  • Price: not published. Somfy India's pages show no prices and say its products are sold through professionals, with a quote request. When we checked, both motors were marked "temporarily out of stock".

Trade-offs. Both motors use Somfy's RTS radio system. Somfy's own HomeKit compatibility FAQ describes RTS as one-way radio control. In practice that means the controller sends a command without getting the curtain position back. Somfy India's pages do not describe Zigbee or Matter support for these motors, and we could not confirm a Somfy bridge that brings them into a Zigbee or Matter home. If you want curtains in the same scenes as the rest of an open-stack system, ask the installer how that would be done before you buy. Do not assume a Smartify controller can drive a Somfy RTS motor; we have not tested that and do not claim it.

Other motor options

Aqara Curtain Driver E1 (track and rod versions)

Aqara Curtain Driver E1, rod version — genuine product image
Aqara Curtain Driver E1, rod version — official Aqara product image. The track version uses different mounting hardware.

Aqara's battery-powered curtain motor mounts on an existing track or rod, with no wiring. It is Zigbee 3.0 and needs an Aqara hub. Aqara's curtain controller FAQ gives a maximum of 12 kg and a battery life of 9 to 10 months, depending on the installation. That makes it suitable for lighter curtains on shorter tracks, and not for heavy blackout drapes. We do not list the E1 in our store. See Aqara products we do stock.

SwitchBot Curtain 3

SwitchBot Curtain 3 comes in U-rail and rod versions, so it is one of the few options for decorative rods. SwitchBot lists up to 15 kg, a silent mode below 25 dB, and a one-year warranty. Matter support, and with it Apple Home, needs the separate SwitchBot Hub 2; voice control through Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Siri Shortcuts also goes through the SwitchBot hub. SwitchBot's page shows prices in US dollars only, and we have not confirmed Indian availability or pricing, so check the seller. We do not list it in our store.

Imported Wi-Fi and Zigbee curtain motors (including Tuya-based)

Many generic and imported curtain motors are sold on marketplaces. Wi-Fi ones, which usually work through the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app, are Wi-Fi only, no hub. They can be fine for a trial or a single window. Build quality, real load capacity and warranty vary a lot between sellers, so treat any load figure you cannot check with the maker as unconfirmed. For a permanent whole-home setup, a named brand with a clear warranty, on Zigbee, Z-Wave or Matter, is the safer choice.

Curtain motor price in India: what we can and cannot quote

We have no in-stock motorised curtain track or sliding-curtain motor with a listed price in our store today. What we stock are controllers and modules. The prices below are the prices listed on our store on 16 October 2026; Smartify prices are MRP including GST, and other brands are as listed on their store pages. Stock and prices change, so check the product page. Somfy publishes no prices, and for Aqara and SwitchBot we have no Indian price to quote, so we leave them out rather than guess.

Open stack: Zigbee and Z-Wave (recommended first)

Zigbee and Z-Wave devices need a gateway. The Smartify Core LAN gateway is ₹8,100, and one gateway serves the whole home, so you pay for it once.

Wi-Fi only, no hub

Wi-Fi-only curtain products connect straight to your router, so there is no gateway to buy and setup is quick. The trade-offs: they usually work only inside that brand's app, each one adds load to your Wi-Fi, and they do not join scenes with Zigbee devices as cleanly. They suit a room or two. For a whole home, an open stack is easier to grow.

What a motor and track will cost on top

A controller only works with a motorised curtain, and the motor, track and fitting are extra. That cost depends on track length, curtain weight, mains or battery, and whether the track is straight or curved. We will not invent a range. Ask for a quote with your track length and a photo, and use the cost calculator to see curtains alongside the rest of your smart home.

Alexa and Google Home with curtain motors

Voice control rarely comes from the motor itself. It comes from the hub or app the motor is paired to.

  • Smartify Layer Shutter and TAC SH: listed as compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit through a Zigbee gateway. Home Assistant support is native on the Layer Shutter.
  • Wi-Fi-only switches such as SmartLife and Cue: voice through their own app's Alexa, Google Home and Siri Shortcuts integration, per the listings.
  • SwitchBot: through the SwitchBot hub.
  • Somfy: Alexa and Google Assistant "may require interface", per Somfy India.

Scene integration: why it matters

A standalone curtain motor that opens and closes from an app is useful. One that takes part in scenes is much better. Examples of scenes people build:

  • Wake-up scene: at a set time, the bedroom curtains open partway, the lights ramp up to warm white and the AC switches to fan mode.
  • Movie mode: living room curtains close, lights dim and the TV input switches via an IR blaster. One tap from the sofa.
  • Afternoon heat: when a temperature sensor passes a threshold you choose, west-facing curtains close during the afternoon to cut solar heat gain.
  • Leave home: when the last person leaves, curtains close, lights turn off and the AC shuts down.

These scenes need the curtain controller and the other devices on protocols that can talk to each other. Zigbee and Z-Wave controllers on one gateway do this cleanly. Wi-Fi-only products and closed systems such as RTS usually need workarounds. For how Zigbee and Wi-Fi differ, read Zigbee hub vs Wi-Fi, or see Zigbee products.

Installation: what to expect

Close view of a ceiling-mounted curtain track, curtain hooks and a slim motor beside beige drapes
Match the drive, track profile, curtain weight and available mounting space before selecting a motor.
  • Controllers and modules such as the Layer Shutter sit behind the wall switch or on a DIN rail and switch mains power to the motor, so an electrician should fit them.
  • Mains-powered track motors need a power point at the track end. If there is none, wiring has to be run to the track.
  • Battery drives need no electrical work, but need regular charging or battery changes.
  • Tracks and mounting depend on whether you have ceiling or wall fixing, curves, and how long the track is.

We do not publish an installation price, because it depends on the points above. Book a free consultation to get a quote for your windows.

Frequently asked questions

Do smart curtain motors work with all curtain tracks?

No. The motor or drive must be compatible with your specific track or rod. Track motors are built for listed profiles, and rod-mounted drives such as SwitchBot Curtain 3 (Rod Type) and Aqara's Curtain Driver E1 (Rod version) exist for round rods. Roller blind motors are a different category and cannot be used with curtain tracks. Always confirm compatibility with the maker before buying.

What is the price of a curtain motor in India?

It depends on whether you mean a motor or a controller. Controllers on our store are listed from ₹2,500; the Smartify Layer Shutter is ₹4,200. We have no in-stock motorised track with a listed price, and Somfy does not publish prices, so a full motor, track and fitting cost needs a quote for your windows.

How do I motorise my existing curtains?

First identify your track or rod and weigh the curtains. Light to medium curtains on a compatible track or rod can use a battery drive. Heavy curtains or long tracks suit a mains-powered motorised track. If your curtains are already on an AC motor, a controller is all you need. See the section above for the checks.

Can motorised curtains handle heavy Indian blackout curtains?

Yes, with the right motor. Published ratings range from 12 kg (Aqara) and 15 kg (SwitchBot Curtain 3) for battery drives to 35 kg on a track up to 10 m for Somfy's mains-powered Movelite 35 RTS. Weigh your curtains with lining and hooks, leave headroom, and choose a mains-powered motor for heavy drapes.

Which curtain motor works with Alexa and Google Home?

Most of them can, through a hub or app. Smartify's Layer Shutter and TAC SH are listed for Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit through a Zigbee gateway. Wi-Fi-only switches use their own app's integration. SwitchBot uses its hub, and Somfy says voice control may require an interface.

Do smart curtain motors require an electrician to install?

Mains-powered motors need a power point near the track, and controllers like the Layer Shutter switch mains power, so an electrician should fit them. Battery drives such as the Aqara E1 and SwitchBot Curtain 3 need no electrical work.

Can the curtains open automatically at sunrise?

Yes. Every controller listed here supports time schedules, and the Layer Shutter is described as able to follow sunrise schedules. Sunrise and sunset triggers come from your hub or app, so check that yours offers them. Home Assistant and most Zigbee hubs do.

Is a Wi-Fi-only curtain controller a good idea?

For one or two rooms, it works and is cheap. It is labelled "Wi-Fi only, no hub" because it works only inside its own app and adds load to your Wi-Fi. If you plan to automate more rooms, a Zigbee or Z-Wave controller on one gateway scales better.

Can I use a Somfy motor in a Zigbee or Matter smart home?

Somfy India's pages describe control through Somfy remotes, wall switches and its Connexoon Window RTS and TaHoma apps. They do not describe Zigbee or Matter support for its RTS curtain motors, and we could not confirm a Somfy bridge for them. Ask the installer how it would join your scenes before you buy.
