Voice Assistants Comparison
Amazon Alexa vs Google Home
Detailed comparison to help you choose the right voice assistants for your smart home.
Short answer: for a smart home in India, choose Alexa if you want the widest choice of compatible devices and routines and already shop on Amazon; choose Google Home if your household runs on Android phones and Google services. Both support Hindi, and Amazon also officially supports Hinglish. The big change this autumn: Amazon began rolling out Alexa+ in India on 16 September 2026 (English, Hindi and Hinglish, free during early access), while Google started replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android phones from 4 September 2026. Before you buy, check that each device lists your assistant. Updated October 2026.

hindi And Hinglish Analysis
Alexa: Amazon added Hindi and Hinglish to Echo devices in India in September 2019, and its own example for smart-home control was “Alexa, light band kar do” (switch the lights off). You switch language in the Alexa app (Device settings, then Language) or by saying “Alexa, help me set up Hindi.” With Alexa+, Amazon says Alexa speaks English, Hindi and Hinglish and can switch languages within one sentence; Alexa+ needs an India-based Amazon account and a device set to English (India) or Hindi (India).
Google: Google’s speakers sold in India supported both English and Hindi when they launched, and Gemini, which has started replacing Assistant on Android phones in India, officially supports Hindi and eight other Indian languages. Coverage of the rollout notes that the “Hey Google” wake phrase is not yet available in several Indian languages, although press-to-talk works.
In practice: device names matter as much as the assistant. Short, distinct names such as “bedroom fan” or “hall light” are easier for either assistant than long ones. We have not run a published head-to-head test of Hindi smart-home commands, so try your own phrases before you buy a full set of devices.
smart Home Support Analysis
Alexa: at the Alexa+ launch Amazon named Atomberg, Qubo, Dreame and Wipro among the smart-home brands it works with in India, alongside services such as Amazon Music, JioSaavn and Prime Video. Many Wi-Fi plugs, bulbs and switches sold in India list Alexa support.
Google: Google Home also supports a large catalogue of Wi-Fi devices and Matter, and integrates with Android phones. We could not find a Google announcement naming Indian smart-home partners, so we cannot rank Google on Indian-brand support using the same evidence.
Before you buy: check the product listing for the assistant you use (Alexa, Google Home or both) and whether the device needs a hub. Matter-certified devices work with both; Zigbee and Thread devices need a compatible hub or controller. See our guides to Zigbee hub vs Wi-Fi and the Matter protocol.
Why open-stack devices work across both assistants: Matter is designed so one device can be added to Alexa and Google Home at the same time. Zigbee devices connect to a hub (such as an Aqara or Smartify hub), and it is the hub, not each device, that is linked to Alexa and Google Home, so every device behind it shows up in both apps. Wi-Fi-only devices work with both only if the brand has built an integration for each assistant, and they usually depend on that brand's app and cloud. Smartify's recommendation is to choose Matter or Zigbee devices first and keep Wi-Fi-only devices for single items such as a camera or a bulb. Smartify sells mostly Zigbee products, so weigh that; all 47 products in its own catalogue list Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home support.
generative Assistant Analysis
Alexa+: Amazon began rolling out Alexa+ in India on 16 September 2026 through early access, for eligible Echo devices, Fire TV and the Alexa app. It is free during early access. Afterwards it stays free for Prime members, while other customers can buy a standalone subscription that Amazon lists at ₹2,000 a month.
Google: Google began replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android phones and tablets in India from 4 September 2026, rolling out over several weeks. We did not find a confirmed India launch of Gemini for Home on Nest speakers and displays, so check Google’s Home help pages before relying on it.
This row compares what is available in India today, not which assistant gives better answers. We have not benchmarked either assistant in Hindi.

Real-World Scenarios
How these products perform in actual Indian homes.
First-Time Smart Home Buyer
Starting your smart home journey and unsure where to begin? Both brands work well, but consider your expansion plans.
Our pick: Amazon Alexa — Amazon Alexa's ecosystem makes it easier to add more devices later without compatibility headaches.
Renters vs Homeowners
Your living situation affects which smart home products make sense. Permanent installations aren't ideal for renters.
For renters: Choose plug-and-play options that don't require hardwiring. Both brands offer portable solutions, but check if specific products need permanent installation.
For homeowners: You can go all-in with either brand. Consider whole-home integration and resale value when choosing.
Budget-Conscious Buyer
Smart home tech can get expensive. Here's how to maximize value with each brand.
Amazon Alexa: Echo Dot Max ₹8,999; Echo Show 8 ₹18,999 (Amazon.in listings, Oct 2026). Consider starter kits for better per-device value.
Google Home: Check Google Store India or Flipkart (current India prices not verified). Often offers competitive pricing without sacrificing features.

Our Verdict
For smart-home control in India, Alexa has the edge today: it supports Hindi and Hinglish, Amazon has published a list of Indian partner brands, and Alexa+ is already rolling out in India. Choose Google Home if your household is built around Android phones and Google services. Either way, check that the devices you plan to buy list your assistant, and test your own Hindi phrases.
